The Department of English Global Studies offers a wide range of engaging courses and seminars. This time, we visited Professor Kevin Bartlett’s fourth year seminar to observe a class and report on what students are learning.
In Professor Kevin’s seminar, students explore global issues, education, applied linguistics, and sociocultural topics through English. Third year students build foundational skills such as critical thinking and basic research, and in the fourth year they participate in a COIL program with Eastern Washington University (EWU), which is one of the highlights of the seminar.
On the day we visited, students were reflecting on their COIL experience. They shared what they had learned during the seven week online exchange and discussed cultural similarities and differences between Japan and the United States with enthusiasm.
During the COIL sessions, American students presented on topics such as university life, slang, AI, discrimination, politics, and cultural norms. MWU students also led a session, introducing Japanese cultural and social perspectives. Interaction took place through presentations, discussion, chat, and screen sharing, and students used English actively while drawing on Japanese when needed to support understanding.
Comments from students included: “It was inspiring to hear American students’ perspectives directly,” and “Explaining Japanese culture was more challenging than I expected, but it was fun.” Their reflections showed how meaningful and enjoyable the international exchange had been.
Professor Kevin’s seminar is an excellent choice for students who want to improve their English, connect with overseas peers, and broaden their international perspectives. It offers a rich learning environment where students can experience real intercultural communication.
