ケビン・バートレット教授（英語文化専攻）が、2026年5月に名古屋で開催されたPanSIG 2026 Conferenceにおいて、日米間のCollaborative Online International Learning（COIL）プロジェクトに関する研究発表を行いました。

本発表では、本学の4年次ゼミ生とアメリカのイースタン・ワシントン大学（Eastern Washington University）でTESOL（英語教育）を学ぶ実習生をオンラインで結び、協働学習を行ったCOILプログラムについて報告しました。学生たちはオンライン交流を通して、教育、文化、社会問題などのテーマについて意見交換を行い、日本語と英語の両方を活用しながら異文化理解を深めました。

発表では、プログラム終了後に実施したアンケートや振り返りジャーナルの分析結果を紹介しました。その結果、日本人学生は異文化に対する理解や自己認識を深めるとともに、自分の考えを英語で表現することへの自信を高めていたことが明らかになりました。また、日本語と英語を柔軟に活用するトランスランゲージングの実践が、コミュニケーションへの不安を軽減し、より深い学びや議論を促進していたことも示されました。

一方、イースタン・ワシントン大学のTESOL実習生からは、日本の大学生との交流を通して、英語学習者への指導に関する理解を深めることができたという報告がありました。また、異なる言語的・文化的背景を持つ学習者への対応力や教育実践力の向上も確認されました。

本研究は、海外渡航を伴わない小規模な国際交流であっても、学生の語学力や異文化理解力の向上に加え、将来教員を目指す学生の専門的成長にも大きく貢献できることを示しています。バートレット教授は、このようなCOIL活動や国際的な協働学習の機会を授業に積極的に取り入れ、学生が実際のコミュニケーションの場面で英語を使用できる環境づくりに取り組んでいます。こうした活動を通して、学生は異文化間コミュニケーション能力や国際的な視野を実践的に養うことができ、グローバル社会で活躍するために必要な力を身につけています。

Professor Kevin Bartlett (Department of English and Global Studies) presented his research at PanSIG 2026 held in Nagoya, where he reported on a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) project connecting fourth-year seminar students at Mukogawa Women’s University with TESOL practicum students from Eastern Washington University in the United States.

The project brought students together through a series of online sessions in which they discussed educational, cultural, and social issues while communicating in both Japanese and English. By working collaboratively with international peers, participants were able to develop their intercultural understanding and communication skills in an authentic learning environment.

During the presentation, Dr. Bartlett shared findings from post-program surveys and reflective journals completed by participants. The results indicated that the Japanese students developed greater intercultural awareness, increased confidence in expressing their ideas, and a deeper understanding of language and communication across cultures. The use of flexible bilingual communication practices, known as translanguaging, also helped reduce communication anxiety and encouraged more meaningful discussions.

The Eastern Washington University TESOL practicum students reported significant professional growth. Through their interactions with Japanese university students, they gained valuable experience working with English language learners and developed a greater understanding of teaching in international and intercultural contexts.

The study demonstrates that even small-scale virtual exchange programs can provide meaningful opportunities for language development, intercultural learning, and professional growth. Dr. Bartlett incorporates COIL activities and other internationally connected learning experiences into his classes to provide students with authentic opportunities to use English for real-world communication. Through these interactions, students are able to apply and further develop the intercultural competencies, communication skills, and global perspectives needed in an increasingly interconnected world. Such initiatives allow students to engage with peers overseas and gain valuable international experience without the need for overseas travel.
