英語グローバル学科のケビン・バートレット教授は、神戸JALT「デジタルツールと教育実践」マイシェアイベントにおいて、「Using Zoom as a Tool to Connect Classrooms Internationally Through a COIL Program」（Zoomを活用したCOILプログラムによる国際教室連携）と題した発表を行いました。

本発表では、武庫川女子大学とアメリカのEastern Washington Universityとの間で実施しているCollaborative Online International Learning（COIL）プログラムについて紹介しました。プログラムの構築に至った経緯や、両大学教員による国際連携の形成過程、そしてZoomを活用した授業設計について説明しました。

また、学生同士の異文化交流を促進するために実施したグループディスカッションや協働課題などの活動内容を紹介するとともに、ブレイクアウトルーム、チャット機能、画面共有などのZoomの機能をどのように活用したかについて具体例を示しました。

さらに、プログラム実施後に収集したアンケート結果や学生のフィードバックを基に、学生の異文化理解、コミュニケーション能力、学習意欲への影響について報告しました。発表の最後には、プログラム運営を通して得られた知見や、オンライン国際交流を導入する際の実践的な提言についても共有しました。

本発表は、オンラインツールを活用した国際協働学習の可能性を示すとともに、教室の枠を超えた学びの機会を学生に提供するCOILプログラムの実践例として、多くの参加者の関心を集めました。

Dr. Kevin Bartlett (Department of English and Global Studies) recently delivered a presentation at the Kobe JALT My Share event titled Using Zoom as a Tool to Connect Classrooms Internationally Through a COIL Program.

The presentation introduced a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) program developed through a partnership between Mukogawa Women’s University and Eastern Washington University in the United States. Dr. Bartlett explained how the collaboration was established, the process of designing the program, and the role that Zoom played in facilitating meaningful intercultural exchanges between students in Japan and the United States.

The presentation also outlined a range of learning activities incorporated into the program, including small-group discussions, collaborative tasks, and intercultural exchanges designed to promote communication and cultural understanding. Particular attention was given to the use of Zoom features such as breakout rooms, screen sharing, chat functions, and collaborative online tools that supported student interaction and engagement.

In addition, Dr. Bartlett shared data and student feedback from the program, highlighting positive outcomes related to intercultural competence, communication skills, and student engagement. The presentation concluded with reflections on lessons learned and practical recommendations for educators interested in developing international classroom partnerships through online technologies.

The session provided attendees with insights into the practical implementation of COIL programs and demonstrated how videoconferencing platforms can be used to create meaningful international learning experiences beyond the traditional classroom.
