ケビン・バートレット准教授（英語文化専攻）が、10月31日から11月2日まで東京で開催された第51回全国語学教育学会（JALT）国際大会において発表を行いました。発表では、授業内で言語と内容の両方を学習する学生を支援するために、柔軟性を持ち、多様なアプローチを取り入れることの重要性について述べました。さらに、バートレット准教授は、学生が学術的な言語と内容を同時に理解できるよう支援する手段として、トランスランゲージングの手法を内容重視型授業に取り入れていることを紹介しました。

その後、昨年度自身の授業を受講した学生を対象に実施した調査の結果を報告しました。調査結果によると、学生たちは日本語と英語の両方の資料を活用することが、英語力、批判的思考力、そして異文化理解力の向上に有益であると感じていました。バートレット先生は、このような柔軟なアプローチを授業で実践し、学生が言語能力と異文化理解力を高められるよう支援しています。

Associate Professor Kevin Bartlett (English and Culture Studies major) gave a presentation at the 51st JALT International Conference, held in Tokyo from October 31st to November 2nd. In his presentation, he discussed the importance of flexibility and adopting varied approaches to support students in learning both language and content in the classroom. He explained how he incorporates translanguaging approaches in content-focused classes as a means of helping students comprehend academic language and subject matter simultaneously. He then presented results from a study conducted with students who took his class last year. The findings showed that students felt using both Japanese and English sources was beneficial for developing their English proficiency, critical thinking skills, and intercultural competence through studying topics with resources from different countries and cultures. Dr. Bartlett continues to apply such flexible approaches in his classes to help students enhance their intercultural competence and language abilities.
